Public Transit

Munich has an outstanding public transit network. All of the TUM locations can be reached easily by bus, tram, subway (U-Bahn) and streetcar (S-Bahn). However, we recommend studying the complex fare system for the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV) transit system carefully. More information is available from the MVV website.

Enrolled doctoral candidates have the option of buying a Semester Ticket. This ticket is valid for the U-Bahn, the S-Bahn, all trams and buses, and some regional trains throughout the MVV network.

When you enroll at TUM as a doctoral candidate, you must pay a student union fee of €129,40 per semester. This fee includes a basic ticket that lets you use the MVV network during certain hours: on weekdays from 6 pm to 6 am, and all day on weekends and holidays.

For an additional €193 per semester, you can buy the “Isarcard Semester,” which lets you use the entire MVV network all day long. More information about the Semester Ticket can be found on the MVV website.

Doctoral candidates who are employed by TUM can also buy a Job Ticket.

Specific directions for traveling to Munich, Freising and Garching can be found on the TUM main page.
