Counselling Services

On this page you will find a range of services that you can perceice as a doctoral candidate at TUM:

The Munich Student Union as well as the DAAD and Research in Germany give a detailed overview of the services, such as legal or credit counseling, that you can perceive during your doctorate at a German university.

Not only in difficult times spirituality and religion can be important to deal with certain situations. Thus, the Catholic University Community (KHG) offers - regardless of your religious confession - the opportunity to get in touch with other doctoral candidates all year round. Their services range from consulting to joint leisure activities. And also the program of the Protestant Education Community (EHG) at TUM is open to all doctoral candidates and definitely worth a look too. The Islamic University Association Munich (IHV) is a group of volunteers of the three Munich universities who have made it their mission to represent the interests of Muslim doctoral candidates.

TUM promotes equal opportunities - as a family-friendly university, it has a long-term investment in balancing family and career. The TUM Graduate School acknowledges and promotes the diversity and differences among doctoral candidates, regardless of gender, nationality, religion and worldview, disability, age or sexual orientation. A broad range of advising and service offerings supports people in all life circumstances.

Contact points for diversity and equal opportunities, such as the Equal Opportunity Office, can be found on the TUM.Diversity website.

In cooperation with the university's women's representative, the Frauennotruf München offers open, confidentially and on request anonymously consultation hours (a registration is not required). If you are living with the consequences of violence, are suffering violent abuse or have been sexually assaulted, please call 0049 89 76 37 37. Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – midnight, Saturday and Sunday from 6 p.m. – midnight.

Unfortunately, the TUM Graduate School has no housing quota for doctoral candidates. However, if you are enrolled at TUM, you have the opportunity to apply for a student residence at the Munich Student Union.

If this does not apply to you, you have the option to apply for a room or apartment in a private dormitory. The Welcome Office of the TUM Graduate School will gladly provide further details if needed.

Our brochure "New in Munich" can be downloaded here.

The TUM Graduate School offers doctoral candidates financial support for international stays abroad. There are also short-term scholarships and grants to provide bridge financing at the start or end of a candidate’s doctoral research phase.

In addition, the Munich Student Union is happy to advise you on a student loan.

If you are in financial need, the Studentenhilfe München provides immediate assistance.
