DestinationTUM - Doctoral Week

Are you interested in doing your doctoral research at the Technical University of Munich (TUM)? Apply now for the virtual DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week from April 12-16, 2021!

Besides getting to know the TUM and the TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS), you will have the opportunity to participate in workshops such as How to fund your doctorate, How to choose a supervisor as well as on other topics related to doctoral research. During the program week, you may also participate in the virtual Career Opportunities Fair where you will have the unique opportunity to meet potential supervisors. Participation is free of charge.

Program

The preliminary programme for this year’s DestinationTUM- Doctoral Week can be downloaded as a .pdf file. The programme might be subject to change. All timings are Central European Summer Time. To ensure that participants from different time zones have the possibility to participate, some of the key program items are offered twice. Successful applicants for the DestinationTUM- Doctoral Week will be invited to register for the program items through a separate email.

Application Eligibility

You may apply for the DestinationTUM - Doctoral Week if you: 

  • Have completed a 2-years Master’s program in a relevant research area with above-average success within the last 3 years at an institution other than TUM, or

  • Will graduate from a 2-years Master's program in a relevant research area with above-average success before September 2021 at an institution other than TUM.

Application Documents

Applications can only be submitted via the application portal. The portal opens on Monday, February 15, 2021. The link to the application portal will be posted here on the same day. The application deadline is Sunday, March 21, 2021. Applicants will be informed whether they have been selected for the event until March 26, 2021. Please hand in all documents in English.

For application, please submit the following documents:

  1. Letter of Motivation (1 page)
    The Letter of Motivation is an essential part of your application and should include (a) your research focus, (b) why you wish to participate in the DestinationTUM - Doctoral Week, and (c) the name of up to three potential host professors you would like to collaborate with. Please explain why you wish to do your doctorate at the research group and under the supervision of the respective professors.

  2. CV incl. list of publications (if applicable)

  3. Abstract of your Master's thesis (max. 1 page)

  4. Master’s diploma or current transcript of records of your Master’s program 

  5. Optional: Letter of recommendation from a TUM Professor you have previously been in touch with.
    If you have already been in contact with a TUM professor who wants to support your application, he/she could provide you with a short statement that he/she would like to see you invited for the DestinationTUM. The short statement (1-2 sentences) needs to be written on official letter paper with date and signature. A longer letter of recommendation is not required for your application. If you have not been in touch with a TUM professor you want to meet, please refrain from approaching them beforehand.

You may use the following websites to help you find professors who fit your research profile: TUM Schools and DepartmentsTUM Clusters of Excellence or TUM Research Centers. You may also go through the list of TUM Professors or TUM Junior Fellows.

Please refrain from contacting TUM Professors beforehand regarding your application for the DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week unless you have already been in touch with them. You do not need to inform the professor(s) that you are listing them in your application.

Please note that only TUM Professors, TUM Head of Institutes or Chairs and TUM Junior Fellows may be named as potential doctoral supervisors. Other scientists cannot be named here. Honorary Professors, Distinguished Affiliated Professors, retired professors including the TUM Emeriti of Excellence and TUM President Prof. Dr. Thomas F. Hofmann cannot be named here.

Review and Selection Process

There is no limit to the number of participants in the DestinationTUM – Doctoral Week. Suitable applicants will be invited to participate and may register for the workshops upon invitation. Places to workshops may be limited and require additional registration. 

All applications will be reviewed by the DestinationTUM Selection Board. The applications will be evaluated with regard to the following criteria:

·        scientific excellence and qualification

·        quality of the motivation letter

·        synergy with TUM hosts and departments 

Applicants will be informed whether they have been selected for the event until March 26, 2021.
