Public Transport
Munich has an outstanding public transport network. All of the TUM locations can be reached easily by bus, tram, subway (U-Bahn) and S-Bahn. Therefore, we recommend having a careful look at the complex fares for the Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund (MVV) transit system. More information is available from the MVV website.
Enrolled doctoral candidates (at all locations in Bavaria) have the possibility to purchase a reduced Deutschland-Ticket for 29 Euros/month from the winter semester 2023/2024 (October 1st, 2023) on. The ticket is valid in all subways, S-Bahn, tramways, busses and regional trains throughout Germany. The regular semester ticket and the IsarCardSemester will be suspended. Further information concerning the reduced Deutschland-Ticket can be found on the website of the MVG.
If you enroll as a doctoral candidate at TUM, you need to pay a semester fee (Studentenwerksbeitrag) of 85 euros per semester (from WS23/24).
If you do not wish to enroll for your doctorate, you can purchase the regular Deutschland-Ticket as a subscription for 49 euros/month.
Please not that there are different rates and regulations for the TUM Campus Heilbronn and Straubing!
Doctoral candidates with employment at the TUM may purchase a Job Ticket, although it will mostly be cheaper to purchase a Deutschland-Ticket. Please note that purchasing the Deutschland-Ticket as a reduced Job Ticket is not possible for TUM employees.
Specific directions for traveling to Munich, Freising and Garching can be found on the TUM main page.
