Dr. Fabian Schäfer

Dr. rer. pol. Fabian Schäfer, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Chair of Supply and Value Chain management at TUM Campus Straubing has been awarded with a Dissertation Award by The Bund der Freunde of the Technical University of Munich.

Dr. Schäfer’s dissertation “Heuristics in Service Operations management” was supervised by Prof. Alexander Hübner. It deals, among others, with the specific problem of the occupancy of hospital beds as well as increasing the satisfaction of all those involved – from patients to nursing staff to doctors. The mathematical model created by Dr. Schäfer takes into account the differing goals and conditions of all participants and includes the planning for future urgent and elective patients, thus reducing the waiting period for a hospital bed by up to 96%. The model is thus especially relevant in the current pandemic situation.

Dr. Fabian Schäfer obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from the MCI Management Center Innsbruck and his Master’s Degree from the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, where he continued working as a scientific assistant before switching to Prof. Hübner’s newly established Chair of Supply and Value Chain Management. Since his successful doctoral graduation in July 2020 Dr. Schäfer has been continuing his work at TUM as a Postdoctoral researcher.
