Recently, a generalization of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem has been proposed where for each activity next to the start time the profile of the resource demand has to be determined. The problem addresses the general problem of assigning (central) resources to different projects and activities. Applications are, amongst others, in pharmaceutical R&D and in medical resident’s training. We present different mathematical programming formulations as well as heuristics for solving the problem.
