Prof. Thibaut Vidal (University of Rio de Janeiro): Born-Again Tree Ensembles: Seeing the Forest for the Trees – The use of machine learning algorithms in finance, medicine, or criminal justice can deeply impact human lives. As a consequence, research into interpretable machine learning has rapidly grown in an attempt to better control and fix possible sources of mistakes and biases. Tree ensembles offer a good prediction quality in various domains, but…

On December 3rd, several AdONE PhD students and associated members attended a virtual workshop on "Gender and the scientific career", led by Dr. Neela Enke from Scienza Science Coaching, Berlin. The aims of the workshop were to build awareness of gender-related issues in the academic career, explore unconscious mechanisms of gender bias, and to improve the participants' own handling of these issues through self-reflection and assessment. The workshop was…

As the first AdONE member to do so, Layla Martin successfully defended her PhD thesis on November 26th, 2020. Her thesis is titled "Rebalancing in Shared Mobility Systems – Competition, Feature-Based Mode Selection and Technology Choice". Congratulations on obtaining your Doctorate, Layla! .

Prof. Margarida Carvalho (University of Montreal): "Correlated, Nash and Stackelberg for integer programming representable games" – Integer programming games (IPGs) are flexible models allowing to describe the interaction of rational players. From the practical point of view, they can suitably model the interactions of decision makers in economics, healthcare, and international agreements, to name few. From the theoretical perspective, IPGs motivate the…

Annually, the GOR (Gesellschaft für Operations Research e.V.) honors outstanding diploma and master’s theses in the field of Operations Research with the GOR Master’s Thesis Prize, which this year was awarded to Pia Ammann, PhD student associated to AdONE. In her thesis, Pia developed an efficient and competitive Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search for a highly constrained Vehicle Routing and Scheduling Problem arising in the charter bus industry.

From October 5 to October 7, the AdONE group travelled to Diessen near lake Ammersee for our annual retreat. The focus of this year's retreat was on reviewing and improving the status of the research group. Two guest lecturers, Prof. Bissan Ghaddar and Prof. Marlin Ulmer, joined the retreat virtually.

Layla Martin, PhD student of the 1st AdONE cohort, has accepted an offer from the Operations, Planning, Accounting & Control group in the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences at Eindhoven University of Technology. Early next year, Layla will start as a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Transportation and Logistics. Congratulations on the next step on the scientific career ladder!

Prof. Alexander Teytelboym (University of Oxford): "The Equilibrium Existence Duality: Equilibrium with Indivisibilities & Income Effects" – We show that, with indivisible goods, the existence of competitive equilibrium fundamentally depends on agents’ substitution effects, not their income effects. Our Equilibrium Existence Duality allows us to transport results on the existence of competitive equilibrium from settings with transferable utility to…

Stefan Kober (TUM, AdONE): "Optimal Placement of Recharging Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles in the Urban Environment" – In recent years, there were various governmental efforts to promote electric vehicles in order to cut (local) emissions in the transport sector. In particular in the urban environment, the recharging cycle for those vehicles cannot be compared to the traditional refueling methods in the private transport sector - thus, the placement…

Richard Littmann (TUM, AdONE): "Strategyproof Auction Mechanisms for Network Procurement" – Deferred acceptance auctions can be seen as heuristic algorithms to solve NP-hard allocation problems. Such auctions have been used in the context of the Incentive Auction by the US Federal Communications Commission in 2017 and they have remarkable incentive properties. Besides being strategyproof they also prevent collusion among participants. Unfortunately, the…
