Facts & Figures - Internationalization at TUM Graduate School

Aktuelles |

Research and science today are more international than ever before. But what does internationalization actually look like at TUM Graduate School? Let’s have a look at the facts and figures:

The TUM Graduate School welcomes doctoral candidates from 28 EU + EEA countries, reaching as far out as Iceland even covering the Island of Cyprus. While Austria and Italy hold second and third place overall in foreign young researchers at TUM-GS, many foreign candidates from Spain, France, Turkey and Greece are currently doing their doctorate at TUM. With the number of candidates steadily rising, TUM Graduate School continues to be a top destination for international doctoral candidates from the whole of Europe.

Looking beyond the diverse group of European doctoral candidates, we are proud to host as many as 2,700 young researchers from all over the world. Strong ties to the Asian continent are seen in the numbers: Our Top 1 origin of doctoral candidates with almost 600 persons holding the respective citizenship is China. With India and Iran coming in as 4th and 5th overall respectively, TUM Graduate School is home to almost 1,200 young researchers from the biggest continent.

Quite closely, doctoral candidates from South America come behind Asia and Europe in the number of internationals. With North America, Africa and Australia following, doctoral candidates represent an ever-growing international community at our campus accordingly.

Being connected to the world includes - besides hosting a diverse group of doctoral candidates - also fostering the strong ties with researchers all over the world. Staying abroad and conducting research is still considered to be highly advantageous to candidates at TUM and very popular: More than 40 % of research stays funded by TUM-GS have been to the United States of America. The podium is completed by two other English-speaking countries, with the UK and Australia making up 7 and 5 percent of the total research stays. Speaking of Australia - did you know that TUM and the University of Queensland have established a research exchange agreement?

The most popular destinations in the EU are Italy and France, but the opportunity to gain international orientation and engage in research is given through five continents! With the upcoming research agreement between TUM and UNESP (São Paulo State University), the TUM-GS is now covering the five continents with a research exchange agreement in Brazil as well.
